"The St. Denis Traveler's Chart of New York City",

Pocket map with advertising for St. Denis Hotel that shows lower Manhattan with red overprinted concentric circles centered on the hotel. Above the map is "St. Denis Hotel and Taylor's Saloon, Cor. Broadway and 11th Street. On the European Plan … William Taylor, Proprietor." The map is well detailed with all major roads named, and scores of ferry routes delineated. The Brooklyn Bridge is the only bridge and is named the "Suspension Bridge." Verso has listing of railroads, stage lines, steamers, and churches with the most convenient routes from the hotel. 16mo gilt-stamped royal blue covers.

The famous St. Denis Hotel, designed by James Renwich Jr., in 1851, was praised for its significant terra cotta ornemantation. Renwich soon after received the commission to design St. Patrick's Cathedral. Many historic figures stayed in the hotel; Abraham Lincoln and P. T. Barnum to mention two. Significantly, Alexander Graham Bell gave the first demonstration of the telephone to New Yorkers here in 1877. A rarely seen advertising map.

Map is near fine with one tiny spot and one small fold intersection split. Outer covers also near fine with a little darkening to gilt titling. Inside blank covers show a little water stain along outer edge.
