"Paxton's Magazine of Botany Vol. 10", Paxton, Joseph

This is Volume 10 of Paxton's magazine that was printed in 1843 and appears to be complete. It features 48 full-page, hand colored engraved botanical prints. These images are remarkable in that they are all well engraved and rendered images of exquisite flowers, including several orchids. The Magazine of Botany is considered a predecessor to today's horticultural magazines. It is highly prized for the brilliant colors of the plates and the beauty of the plants illustrated. Each fine engraving was hand colored, and treated with an egg white wash to preserve the color. In addition to the plates, it contains descriptions of flowering plants, as well as advice for the gardener. Here each plate still has its original protective tissue guard attesting to the care this book has received over the years. Hardbound in green cloth with leather spine and tips, title page, dedication, advertisement, Latin Index, English Index, Wood-Cut Illustrations (18 images in text), plates and text, General Index, 280pp. Published by William S. Orr & Co., Paternoster Row. A terrific example of Paxton's work.
