This handsome map of the Hudson Bay region shows the progress of exploration at the time. The cartography is derived from Sanson's map of the region in 1650 with information derived from the voyages of Hudson, James and Buttons. The map illustrates the potential of finding a Northwest Passage in the region. Hudson Bay is quite misshapen with many potential outlets to the Pacific, and a note in French next to a spurious Destroit d'Anian explaining that it will connect the Atlantic and the Pacific. Foxe Basin is here named Baffin Bay, and there is an odd a finger of land within Hudson Bay with a smaller Hudson Bay inside of it.
