This decorative map is a circular hemisphere completely surrounded by steel-engraved vignettes featuring whales, natives, polar bears, penguins and other indigenous animals all tied together with a fancy vine-style border interspersed with cactus, agaves and melons. The map extends to include New Zealand and the Solomon Islands in the Pacific, and the Cape Verde Islands in the Atlantic. Alaska is Russian America, Oregon Territory takes in the whole Northwest, New California occupies the entire Southwest, and Texas is shown with a huge panhandle. The coast of Antarctica is somewhat defined. The map was drawn and engraved by John Rapkin with decorative elements by H. Warren and J. Rogers.
