A fine and complete example of Zell's American Edition of John Bartholomew's atlas. It contains 36 colored maps; 35 are numbered and an additional folding map of Michigan is pasted to blank verso of No 11., Michigan, Wisconsin & Minnesota. This map is in mint condition and features a most decorative title and border in a Victorian style. No maker is identified. All other maps carry the copyright notice of Zell with Bartholomew credited at lower right. Thirty-two of the maps are large double-page sheets. Frontispiece, title page with engraved allegorical figures representing the continents, census of 1880, preface, index, introduction, atlas text, charts and maps, general index, approximately 300pp. The frontispiece is a full color engraving representing the "Flags of All Nations." Zell's Atlases were first issued in parts, and then published together as an complete volume beginning in 1873. This atlas is hardbound in full brown calf with a red and gold title plate on the spine. A beautiful atlas, its condition will really shine with a little attention to the binding.
