Complete eight page Oil and Petroleum related issue of The New York Herald, October 14, 1864. The large map (9.5 x 9.3") on the front-page above the fold shows Venango County in detail and the oil discoveries in Pennsylvania. The rest of the front-page features a very long article titled "Petrolia" with subheadings like "The Varied Uses of Petroleum," "Blubber in the Ocean at a Discount," and "The Oil to be Transported in Iron Pipes to Railways." The full-page article contains a remarkable amount of information on oil discoveries, drilling activities, the economic effect, the future of oil, and much more. It is stated that there are over 250 oil companies and a long list names (more than 100 with their capitalization and par values) is given. Inside are hundreds of fascinating classifieds, plus a long article detailing the "Rout of the Rebels Under Rosser" from a report filed from the action in the Shenandoah Valley.
