"The Road from Carlisle com. Cumbr. To Barwick upon Tweed com. Northumbr.", Ogilby, John

Beautiful strip-style road map with a title cartouche that features the agricultural bounty of the region. The map extends to Berwick and, importantly, is the only map in the 1675 Britannia that names and enters Scotland as well as showing Scottish towns of Kelso and Jedburgh. According to Moreland and Bannister, Ogilby was the first to use the standard mile of 1,760 yards, the measurement used today.

Condition: A

Crisp, dark impression on fine hand laid paper with wide margins. The copper plate had more 'tooth' then normally seen, giving it the ability to hold a light overall fog of ink, and giving the map a healthy tonal quality in the normally white areas.
