"Map of Oregon, Washington, and Part of British Columbia", Mitchell, Samuel Augustus

In 1859, Oregon became a state and in the process Washington gained land from Oregon that is east of today's eastern border. This map shows Washington in the uncommon configuration of an inverted 'L' that includes much of Montana and all of Idaho. It clearly shows the Oregon Trail, here called the Emigrant Waggon Road to California. The entire eastern half of Oregon is unorganized with Klamath, Curry and Wasgoren (likely an editing error for Wasco) Counties being the furthest east. The eastern part of the state is labeled as unexplored. Klamath County was not organized until 1882, so its appearance here is a mystery. A wonderful example of this desirable map with Mitchell's first edition decorative floral border.
