An interesting copper engraving depicting the early days of manned balloon flight. James Sadler was the first Englishman to ascend in a balloon, on October 4, 1784. He became a skillful and daring pilot, and used his inventive mind to develop an ingenious damper mechanism to control the flow of hot air into the balloon. The engraving shows Mr. Sadler ascending in his balloon with its highly decorated car and some of the apparatus used to inflate the balloon.
