An engrossing group of maps from this scarce atlas that is exceptional for its thematic maps and "spheroidal" maps of the world, which have a three-dimensional effect. The popularity of thematic maps reached its zenith in the mid-nineteenth century when advances in printing techniques made possible the production of maps that could clearly display the spatial aspects of physical and cultural phenomena. Sizes vary slightly on sheet size 34 x 24". Printed color with some finishing by hand. Included in this lot are:

No. 2. Tableau d' Uranographie Moderne ou Systeme Spheroidal Celeste is a description of the solar system, showing the constellations in the skies of autumn, winter, spring and summer. At the bottom is a series of three spheres showing the North and South Poles, and the Copernican solar system.
No. 3. Tableau des Principales Projections Usitees pour la Construction des Cartes Geographiques. This shows the various global projections used by mapmakers, including Mercator, Flamsteed, and many more.
No. 5. Tableau Comparatif de l'Etat des Connaissances Geographiques. This map shows the voyages of discovery with a chart at bottom with the dates and explorations.
No. 8. Tableau General de Navigation, ou des Routes a Travers les Oceans. This map depicts the regular sailing routes throughout the world, while three insets on the bottom describe the differences the Suez and Panama canals will make in navigation.
No. 9. Tableau General de Thermometrie dans les Diverses Contrees du Globe. This shows the extent of weather trends, including glaciers and snow, with insets at the bottom showing vegetative zones and extreme zones.
No. 10. Tableau Synoptique et Abrege du Systeme Magnetique Terrestre. This is a fascinating depiction of the magnetic affects around the world, with a table at the bottom describing magnetic phenomena.
No. 11. Tableau des Diverses Projections des Cartes de l'Atlas Spheroidal. Displays a variety of spheroidal projections.
No. 13. Tableau Spheroidal de la Terre ou Mappemonde en Deux Hemispheres. This map shows the spheroidal distortion of the earth.

Condition: B+

Most maps very good, clean and bright with minor soil, a few short tears or creases in blank margins. No. 9 with centerfold separation just into the map at bottom; No. 13 with extraneous creasing at center and some archival tape applied to the face of the map.
