This is one of the most unusual engravings included in Ortelius' Paregon, which contained historical maps designed by Ortelius himself. In the explanation Ortelius expresses his regret that the seven wonders of the ancient world no longer existed. He presents the view of the Escorial, the newly built seat of King Philipp II of Spain, as a modern counterpart. He describes its function as a church, monastery, university and palace, and boasts that there is enough room to entertain and lodge four kings at once! Latin text on verso, published in 1624.
