A terrific Panama Canal piece made after the French construction efforts were abandoned and before actual work by the U.S. had begun in November, 1904. The bird's-eye view shows the plan for the entire canal from the Atlantic through Lake Bohio and on to the Pacific Ocean. An elevation at bottom shows the excavations made by the Old Company and the excavation remaining to be done by the New Company. The French efforts, of course, are here referred to as the Old Company. The French, who had abandoned their efforts by 1899, had already excavated nearly 60 million cubic meters of earth. Before the project was completed more than 215 cubic meters were excavated by a work force that reached, at its peak, 39,000 people. A fine Panama Canal map that we haven't seen on the market in several years.
