Two attractive maps illustrating how very differently the continent was mapped during the 18th century when there was still very little actually known of the interior. First is by Claude Buffier, circa 1750 (8.6 x 7"). This map is filled with mostly spurious topographical details, following the models of the early part of the century. The Nile is shown without a definite source. The second map is by Rigobert Bonne, circa 1780, engraved by Andre (12.6 x 8.2"). It provides a minimum amount of detail, especially in southern Africa where only some bays and the ancient kingdom of Monomotapa are named. Here Bonne depicts only that information that has been confirmed and leaves the unknown interior largely blank.

References: Bonne - Norwich #103.

Condition: B

First with binding trim at lower left neatline and bit a faint foxing. Second very good with a short tear in bottom margin. Both with later color.
