This is a reduced version of Tavernier's rare map of Japan. Tavernier, a gem merchant, had not actually visited Japan, but compiled his map from reports gathered during his travels, particularly in Batavia. The map follows the Blancus/Moreira model with a slightly enlarged Noto Peninsula. Most of the detail is confined to the southern coastlines where the route of the Dutch from Nagasaki to Edo is traced. Also of interest are several notations regarding the beautiful girls of Okazaki and the locations of silver mines. Adorned with a title cartouche, compass rose and a variety of ships. This is the second state with the page number beside the title cartouche instead of above the top right border.
