These two maps provide an interesting comparison of the mapping of the Balkan Peninsula from the middle of the eighteenth century to the beginning of the nineteenth century. First (8 x 9.5") by Didier Robert de Vaugondy, dated 1762, was published in Nouvel Atlas Portatif. It shows the major political divisions and cities and is decorated with a lovely title cartouche displaying cannon and military flags. The second map (13 x 18") is by John Thomson, from A New General Atlas, Edinburgh, 1816. This map provides a much more detailed view of the topography with roads and many place names. The title is contained in a bold block.
