George Horatio Derby, better known as a brilliant humorist, was a trained topographer and produced several maps of major importance.

An interesting map of the area south of the San Joaquin River from the Pacific Ocean to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains that was not published until 1852. A road to Los Angeles runs down the center of the map. There is also a road from Monterey to San Louis Obispo with several villages shown along the way. Derby's route is traced by dashed lines and several mountain passes are noted. Wheat calls this a map of major importance to the Gold Rush.
