The most impressive features are the 17 views of entrances and promontories along this rugged coastline, among them Santa Barbara, Catalina Harbor, and the entrance to San Francisco Bay. 2) "Reconnaissance of the Western Coast of the United States Middle Sheet From San Francisco to Umpquah River," 1854, (22 x 25"). Matching southern portion the map above, also from the first official scientific reconnaissance of the Pacific coast, with twelve equally impressive views. 3) "Upper Part of San Francisco Bay California," dated 1862, (35.5 x 26"). Tide and sounding chart that locates and names Thompson's Landing, Union City Creek, Coyote Hill Creek, Redwood City, etc.
