Edited by Annie Heloise Abel with an informative introduction by her. Contains the letters written between 1848 and 1854. Calhoun was the first territorial governor to New Mexico Territory and in favor of the settlement of nomadic Indians onto reservations. Complete with four large folding maps in back pocket: "Map of the Country Between the Frontiers of Arkansas and New Mexico embracing the section explored 1849, 50, 51, & 52, by Capt. R.C. Marcy" (60 x 27.5"); "Sketch Map Prepared by Calhoun in 1849, Suggesting Localities for Indian Agencies" (23.5 x 18.5"); "Map of the Territory of New Mexico Compiled by Bvt. 2nd Lt. Jno G. Parke, Santa Fe. NM, 1851" (33 x 24"); "Map of the Territory of new Mexico, made by order of Brig. Gen S.W. Kearny… 1846-7". 554 pp. Hardbound, 8vo, tan cloth. The signature of Sam G. Bratton on inside cover. Bratton was a judge and U.S. Senator to New Mexico in the years 1925-1933.
