Three very finely rendered double-tinted military/battle scenes. Includes: A Christmas Dinner on the Heights Before Sebastopol, Plate XXX (14 x 8.7"); The Graves in the Fort on Cathcart's Hill, of the Officers 4th. Division who Fell at Inkermann, Plate XIV (13.7 x 8"); The Field of Inkermann (17 x 10.4"). William Simpson, artist and war correspondent, was born in Glasgow in 1823. After the Crimean war broke out he was sent to the region to make sketches on the spot. Arriving at Balaclava in November 1854, he remained with the British army until the fall of Sebastopol. Simpson is considered the pioneer war-artist, and received several commissions to paint images of the war for the queen.
