Magnificent plan of the battle of Malplaquet in the War of the Spanish Succession, one of the bloodiest contests in modern history. On September 11, 1709, the combined forces of England and the Holy Roman emperor, led by the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy met the French army under Marshal Villars. The battle was a strategic victory for France as it prevented an allied advance to Paris. In addition to the incredible military details presented, the map is embellished in the lower corners in a military theme, as well as the large title and dedication cartouche to Prince Eugene of Savoy, the Duke of Marlborough, and Count von Tilly. Interestingly the dedication refers to the conflict as the battle of Blangies (a nearby village). Anna Beek published several maps and plans of battlefields and sieges during the War of Succession between 1697-1717. She did not published any specific atlas, but her plans appeared in composite atlases and other publisher's atlases such as Visscher's War Atlas.
