Striking title page from one of the most magnificent sea atlases produced in France. The sheet is filled with mythological figures and angels aboard a ship during a storm. Jaillot, originally a sculptor, became interested in geography after his marriage to the daughter of Nicolas Berey, a famous map colorist. He went into partnership with Sanson's sons and undertook the re-engraving, enlarging and re-publishing of Sanson maps in an effort to fill the gap in the map trade left by the destruction of Blaeu's printing establishment in 1672.
