"United States and Texas", Johnston, Alexander K.

This is a later, and much more uncommon, edition of this fine map that was first published in 1843. This version incorporates many changes reflecting the rapid westward expansion and provides excellent detail of the extensive road and railway networks. An oversized Minnesota Territory contains those portions of the Dakotas east of the Missouri River, beyond which is the Nebraska Territory. Kanzas Territory extends to the Rockies and New Mexico appears on the western extreme of the map. The most striking feature of the map is a unique configuration for Texas that incorporates most of present-day Oklahoma. A note concerning the recent independence of the state reads, "The Independence of Texas was formally declared in March 1836. It was recognized by Great Britain in Novr. 1840; and has been acknowledged by the United States, France, Holland and Belgium." Another interesting notation describes the slave-holding states. Inset at top left is a "Sketch of the River Niagara." Keyboard style borders.
