"Peacock's New Double Dissection Geography & History The World", Peacock, W.

This original wooden box holds a jigsaw puzzle map of the World. The box is illustrated with colorful scenes including the allegorical representations of America, Europe and Asia, an ostrich, a kangaroo, and a military scene. It measures 8 x 10" and is 1 1/2" deep. The map is titled Betts's London Series of Maps - The World on Mercator's Projection. On verso is part of the story of Cinderella with chromolithograph illustrations. The engravings are pasted onto a thin board and hand cut into puzzle pieces with the outer ones interlocking. The map is missing four pieces (Central America, Scandinavia, Arabia and a stretch of the Pacific Ocean off South America). Puzzle size is 20 x 12.5". John Betts and William Peacock were prolific publishers of educational puzzles from the middle to the late 19th century.
