Early Maps, by Tony Campbell, 1991 is a good reference, as well as a beautiful book. Complete with 68 full-color illustrations, many foldout. Each entry includes background information on the cartographer and an explanation of the political developments and geographic discoveries or misconceptions that influenced the map's design. 148 pp., index. (12 x 15") Hardbound in green cloth with dust jacket. Old European Cities, by Arthur Hibbert and Ruthardt Oehme, c. 1955 is fine reference to Braun and Hogenberg's Civitates Orbis Terrarum, the first atlas devoted to city views.
