"[Illuminated Leaf]", Anon.

Fine vellum leaf from a manuscript Bible probably from France. It is written in a very neat bookhand in black ink with many penwork decorations at the beginning of each chapter. The chapter divisions in the Bible were invented in 1205 by Stephen Langton, a professor in Paris (later the Archbishop of Canterbury). The text is in two columns of about 50 lines, with 3 initials in red and blue penwork. The name of the book is in red and blue letters at the top of the page: DEU - TERO [nomii]. The numbers of the chapters are in red and blue as well: X, XI and XII. On both sides are some corrections in the margins, added by a later hand.
