"[Lot of 2] France, Plate 1 [and] England, Plate II", Hogarth, William

Pair of satirical engravings dealing with British-French military rivalry. Plate I depicts a group of French soldiers roasting a meal of frogs and preparing to invade England. Below the scene is a poem, beginning, "With lantern jaws and craking gut, See how the half starvid Frenchmen strut, And call us English Dogs…". Plate II shows a group of common people poking fun at the French king and his armies. This verse begins, "See John the Soldier, Jack the Tar, With sword & Pistol arm'd for War…". Engraved by T.
