Finely engraved and hand colored map centered on the North Pole that details the extensive Arctic explorations to date. Legend and color locates the expeditions of 16 explorers including Parry, Belcher, etc. Wyld dedicates the map to lady Franklin, widow of the Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin, who died in 1847. Third edition. Mounted on linen and folded into embossed brown cloth slipcase with full original paper label. List of new map's by Wyld on pastedown on inside cover. James Wyld introduced lithographic map printing in England and acquired William Faden's business in 1823. His son, also James, continued after his father's death in 1836 until the business was sold in 1892 to G.W. Bacon. A very scarce issue.

A few pin holes inside and outside of map, nearly invisible. Close trimmed at bottom, as issued, with loss to Wyld's copyright notice.
