"Tabula II Asiae", Ptolemy/Fries

Woodblock Ptolemaic map of ancient Sarmatia located northeast of the Black Sea. Convoluted mountain ranges dominate the trapezoidal map and three gates are shown in the Caucasus Mountains. The Columpne Alexandri is shown in present day Georgia. The woodcut map from the blocks of Laurent Fries is based on the work of Waldseemuller. This edition was edited by Michael Servetus, the martyr executed by the Calvins in 1553 for heresy. The Latin text on verso includes a border and ornamentation attributed to Hans Holbein.
