First is an important work on early cartography through the study of Portuguese nautical charts and their makers. Includes an exhaustive study of portolan charts with many bibliographic references. Written by Armando Cortesoa, published by Edicao da Seara Nova, Lisbon, 1935. Two volumes, quarto, xliv + 389 and 446 pp., including a 33-page index, plus 56 pages of maps and illustrations. Handsomely bound in three-quarter leather, gilt decorated and raised band spine. Second by Gilberto Freyre is a scholarly treatise on Portuguese colonization in the New World. Published by the Executive Committee for the Commemoration of the 5th Centenary of Henry the Navigator, Lisbon, 1961. 8vo, 296 pp. Pictorial soft cover.
