Subtitled: "A recital of the actual events, incidents, trials, hardships, vicissitudes, adventures, perils, and escapes of a Pioneer, Hunter, Miner and Scout of the Pacific Northwest together with his later experiences in official and business capacities, and a brief description of the resources, beauties and advantages of the New Northwest; the several Indian Wars, Anecdotes, etc." This is an incredible story of Col. Hunter's migration across the plains in 1852 and various exploits in the Pacific Northwest. Mining life in the Shasta City district is vividly portrayed, as is the narrative of the Rogue River Indian War of 1853, the Nez Perce War, running the mail coach from Salt Lake to Virginia City, and many other activities all over the region. In 1880 he was elected to serve in the Washington Territory Legislature. First edition published by H. S. Crocker and Company. 8vo, original burgundy cloth, spine gilt lettered, front cover lettered and pictorially decorated in black. xxv, 454 pp. Lithographic frontis portrait and 15 plates after drawings.
