Volume VII of Scherer's Atlas Novus. Heinrich Scherer, professor of mathematics at Munich, published this geographical compendium in seven parts. As a devote Jesuit, many of the maps and plates in the atlas emphasize the Catholic hierarchy and the spread of Jesuit missions throughout the world. The beautiful frontispiece was drawn by Johan Degler and engraved by Matthaus Wolffgang. It features an armillary sphere and is elegantly engraved with allegorical figures, the hand of God, and ships. Includes a nice world map on a North Polar projection showing the Island of California, an astronomical diagram in the top left-hand part of the map, and enlargements of both Greenland and Iceland to the right of the diagram. Also includes a finely detailed map of central Africa focusing on the origin of the Nile in the basic Ptolemaic form, but with a fantastic system of interconnected rivers. Sixteen additional plates contain astronomical diagrams, calendars, and charts showing the world's major cities on various projections. Rebound in 19th century vellum incorporating part of the original title on spine, 228 pp+index, frontis+18 copper engraved plates.
