Attractive map of Ambon, in the Moluccas Islands or better known as the Spice Islands. These islands were of tremendous importance for their spice production of nutmeg, cloves, fine woods, fruits, etc., and were long fought over by European powers. The map is delicately engraved with rhumb lines radiating out from the compass rose and the small fleur-de-lys. Bellin is best known for his high quality French sea charts and his finely engraved world maps for Prevost's "L'Histoire Generale des Voyages".
