This is the map of Wheeler's epic journey in 1871 up the Colorado River from Camp Mohave (near Needles, Arizona) to Diamond Creek. Published in 1878, this map shows the course of the Colorado River from the California line to about midway of the Grand Canyon. A table provides the camps of the River party. Detailed geographic information make this a valuable record of Western exploration. Goetzman in Exploration and Empire provides a vivid account of the perils and obstacles overcome during the trip.
