This unusual map is focused on the transportation system of railroads, rivers and canals servicing Cairo, Illinois. Situated at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, the city of Cairo was a potential site for railroads, steamship companies, and military bases, but development didn't take off until the Civil War. The legend identifies both completed and unfinished railroad lines and canals.
