Old World Auctions

GUIDE TO THE AUCTION

Old World Auctions specializes in genuine antique maps and prints originating between the 15th and 19th centuries. All lots are offered for sale by Old World Auctions, either as owner or, as agent for various consignors. All offerings are personally inspected by us, and catalog descriptions are carefully researched and prepared. We guarantee the authenticity and condition of each item. WE ARE NOT A PERSON-TO-PERSON INTERNET AUCTION. The website catalog is issued in conjunction with our printed catalog, which is mailed to subscribers. We do not have a live floor auction. All bidding is received either online, or by mail, telephone or fax.

CATALOG

Each item is described as completely as is practical. Please feel free to request additional information on any item. We will be pleased to more fully describe the item and give a detailed condition report. However, we ask that you not request additional information on the day of the auction, as we are fully committed to taking telephone bids during that time.

The catalog is organized by subject or geographical region. A Table of Contents is provided to help you find items. You may also search the catalog with our powerful search engine to find specific items matching your criteria.

Each lot description follows a basic format, and includes:

Title exactly as it appears, in the language of the publication (including any old spellings)
Maker – cartographer, artist, engraver or author
Date – dated, published, or circa
Source publication, where known
Condition Code – see below
Color – uncolored, hand-colored in outline, hand-colored in full color, or printed color
Size – width before height, to include only the printed image (within 1/4”)
Description – including the salient features, historic significance, and references. Also included is a description of any significant flaws, damage or repairs.

CONDITION

Every effort is made to accurately describe the condition of each item. We have used the following guidelines to develop the condition code system. While condition is important, it must also be kept in mind that all items are original, generally several hundred years old, and should not be expected to be as new. Minor flaws, such as tiny spots or printer's creases generally have only a minimal effect on the value of an item. These codes should be used as a general guide. Significant flaws are noted in addition to the code. Please contact if you need further information.

(A+) Fine condition. Clean and bright, with crisp engraved lines. On sound paper with wide margins. Any minor restoration has been accomplished professionally.
(A) Very good condition. Clean and bright, with crisp engraved lines. On sound paper with no noticeable imperfections in the image. Light age toning of image. Small tears or minor discoloration in the margins only.
(B) Good condition. No significant imperfections. Minor spotting, foxing, short separations on centerfold with no image loss, or overall age toning may be present. May have narrow margins, but paper is still sound.
(C) Fair condition. Noticeable imperfections. Scattered foxing or spotting. Long separations on centerfold or tears entering image which can be easily repaired.
(D) Poor condition. Needs significant repair and cleaning. Paper may be highly acid and brittle.

USING THE ON-LINE CATALOG, BIDDING QUESTIONS...

An estimate is provided as a guide to the item's value. These estimates are conservative and based, wherever possible, on past auction prices. Lots may end up selling for more or less than the estimated price. You may bid any amount, but you must bid according to the following bidding increments. Bids received, which are not in accordance with these increments, will be reduced to the next lower increment.

Under $25............. $1.00
$25-50..................$2.50
$50-100................$5.00
$100-250..............$10.00
$250-500..............$25.00

$500-1,000.......... $50.00
$1,000-2,500....... $100.00
$2,500-5,000........$250.00
$5,000 & Up....... $500.00

RESERVES

There are no reserves on lots with estimates of $25 or under. Where reserves exist on higher priced lots, they are not more than 75% of the low estimate, unless noted in the catalog description. If a reserve is less than 75% of the low estimate it may be kept confidential. If you submit a bid below the reserve, you will be notified that the seller is not obligated to accept the bid. As a general rule, bids less than 50% of the estimate may be rejected.

PROXY BIDDING

The proxy bidding system is designed to simulate what happens in a floor auction. The computer system will act as your bidding agent by entering your bid competitively against other bidders. The winning bid is always reduced to one increment above the next bid. For example, if the highest bid for a lot is $100 and the under bid is $60, the winning bid will be $65. If an item has a reserve, and no other bids exist, the bid will be reduced to that amount. However, bids of $25 or less are not reduced. Your maximum bid is always completely confidential.

BIDDING STATUS

After placing bids, you may view the status of all your bids at the Customer Center. You will need to provide your user name and password. If you want to update a bid for an item on your bid sheet, click on the item number.

AUCTION CLOSING

The auction closes after 10pm Eastern Time when all bidding activity has stopped for 10 minutes. Again this simulates what happens in a floor auction. The auctioneer signals the impending close of an auction, but does not bring the final hammer down until there are no more bids. This eliminates the problem of sniping often associated with Internet auctions. We strongly suggest that you simply enter your maximum bid early and let our Proxy system competitevly enter your bids. This way you are relieved of closly monitoring the auction with the chance of losing the item. We expect heavy traffic on the website, and on the telephone, at the close of the auction. You may check your status at anytime through the Customer Center.

BUYERS PREMIUM

A 10% buyer's premium will be added to the winning bid of each lot.

INVOICING

Invoices are prepared following a complete audit of the auction. Those bidders who have provided advance credit card authorization (this includes all first-time bidders) can expect to receive shipment within two weeks following the auction close. Others will be invoiced at the end of the auction.
