This is a superb engraving illustrating the flags of all seafaring nations from Europe, Africa and Asia. There are 191 flags shown along with a color key in the bottom right corner. The title claims that 50 of the flags are new, having "never been brought to light." Indeed the flag at top right is labeled Niew Engeland. Nouv.le Anglet. (New England). This is believed to be one of the earliest recorded images of the flag of New England. The color key indicates that the background was blue, with a red St. George's cross of England over a white canton, and a small globe in the upper left quadrant. A rare issue printed in sepia ink.

Condition Description: A nice example with professional repairs to a centerfold separation at bottom, a tear that extends 4" into bottom row of flags, and a small chip in bottom blank margin.
