Very scarce derivative of Hondius' influential map of 1618. This map was originally drawn by Petrus Bertius in 1624 (the first state of which is now extremely rare). This is the second state with an interesting alteration in North America. The entire west coast has been re-engraved above Baja California with the legend Pays Non Encore Descoverts (land not yet discovered). This reflects the then current controversy over whether or not California was an island. Another improvement over Hondius' map of 1618 is the completion of the southern coastline of Tierra del Fuego. There is not a lot of detail along the eastern coast in the mid-Atlantic region. In the Southwest the famous seven cities of Cibola appear on the banks of a large spurious lake. In South America, the mythical Parime Lac appears as a large inland sea in Guiana and there are two engraved scenes, one detailing a cannibalistic feast and the other showing a mythical giant of Patagonia. Two stylized insets of the polar regions are enclosed in strapwork cartouches; the North Pole depicts Frobisher's theory of the Northwest Passage and the South Pole shows the long-held notion of the mythical southern continent. The map is finely ornamented with galleons, sea monsters, and a ribbon-draped title cartouche.

Condition Description: A nice impression on watermarked paper. Issued folding, now pressed, with minor printer's ink residue and a couple of minute professional repairs along the folds. An exceptionally nice example.

Ref: Burden #209.

Bid Increments Minimum bid is $950.00.
Enter your maximum bid - the Proxy Bidding System will competitively enter your bid. Please note that Proxy bids only work once the reserve value has been met. Any bids placed below (or equal to) the reserve will be entered at face value.

Do not use a comma (,) or a decimal point (.). Use whole numbers only!

  • Bids must be entered in bidding increments. Bids that do not correspond to bidding increments will be reduced to the next lower increment.
  • The Buyer's premium of 15% will be added to all winning bids.
Our "Proxy Bidding" service takes the worry out of bidding - here's how it works:

• When you bid, you enter the maximum amount you are willing to pay for the item. Your maximum bid is kept secret from other bidders and the consignor.
• Our system compares your bid to bids by other bidders. The system automatically bids on your behalf, using only as much of your bid as is necessary to maintain your high bid position, or to meet the reserve price. You don't have to closely monitor the auction as it unfolds.
• If another bidder has a higher maximum bid, you will be out bid. At the auction close if you have the highest bid you win the item. You can end up paying less than your maximum bid depending on what other bidders have bid.
• You can raise your maximum bid at anytime. And you will never bid against yourself, just everyone else!

Your bid is a contract - Only place a bid if you're serious about buying the item; if you're the winning bidder, you have entered into a legally binding contract to purchase the item from Old World Auctions.
