Exquisite portrait of two of the most important mapmakers during the Dutch dominance of cartography. Gerard Mercator is shown with his successor, Jodocus Hondius, seated at a table surrounded by the implements of their trade. The fine portrait is set within an elaborate strapwork framework that encompasses a map of Europe. The scene was engraved by Coletta Hondius and appears in the Atlas from 1613 onwards.

This is a strong fine impression with attractive old color. Professionally backed with Japanese tissue to repair centerfold and several tears in the margins, a couple of which intruded into the image.
