The following lots are very early copper engraved scenes from Thoedore de Bry’s Grand Voyages. This collection of early voyages (published between 1598 and 1634) are among the first accounts of the New World. They are considered one of the most important of their kind; often the first views of America available to Europeans.

365. Untitled. 7 x 10.2". Full page engraving of Virginia natives gathered around a bonfire, singing and shaking rattles to give thanks for escaping some danger of a safe return from war. Good impression with one tiny abrasions. (A)   Click image for full size.  $300

366. X. Crisp impression of one of the 1st European settlements in America. Plan of the French Fort Caroline in Florida. Built in the shape of a triangle on the river May. The engraving depicts the fortifications, living quarters, French flag, canon. $275 reserve. (A) Illustrated below left.  $350

367. XXVII. 8.5 x 6". Scene of a native Floridian family crossing a shallow river to picnic on one of the outer islands. The woman is carrying three children and a basket of fruit. The following are exceptional copper engraving by Edward Donovan. They were published in The Natural History of British Birds, London, in 1795. Donovan was both a painter and engraver and his work is considered among the finest of 18th century natural history art. Each is lavishly hand-colored and delicately engraved on a 5.5 x 9" sheet of fine paper.  Lot #368 illustrated below.

The following lots are hand-colored lithographs of the Crimean War. They were published by Paul & Dominic Colnaghi & Co., Publishers to Her Majesty, London, 1855 and are part of the Colnaghi’s Authentic Series from drawings by W. Simpson. Lithography by Day & Son, Lithographers to the Queen. Each is printed on very heavy card-stock type paper with registration holes at each corner to insure perfect alignment of the stones during printing. Each image is very finely rendered and beautifully hand-colored, which is very rare for this edition of prints. Old library stamp on verso.

379. Sentinel of the Zouaves, Before Sevastopol. 13.7 x 11". A chilling winter scene with a sentinel guarding a canon position. There is a tent camp in the background with soldiers packing wood to the camp. (A) $70

380. The Camp of the 1st Division Looking North Toward the Camp of the 2nd Division - The Heights of Inkermann in the Distance. 17.5 x 11.5". Winter scene with supply wagons on the road into the camp. (A) $70

381. Camp of the Naval Brigade, before Sevastopol. 16.5 x 11.5". Fine view of the orderly camp perched on a hillside with a view of the whole valley and surrounding camps. Group of soldiers in the foreground. (A) $70

The following prints are from Frederic Remington’s portfolio Drawings, published in 1897. Each in an uncolored early halftone print, approximately 13.5 x 9", and all signed in the plate by Remington.

(BW) Finely engraved and rendered view of the White House. An early and historical view when no trees or fences surrounded the structure. Full margins and thick paper. (B) $35

391. Maryland (Baltimore), J.R. Smith, Malte-Brun System of Universal Geography, Boston, [1834]. 8 x 5.5". (BW) Copper engraving, good impression. Looking across the river to the city. Several ships including two at dry dock on their sides with shipwrights caulking planks. Great detail of the buildings in this rarely seen view. A few light marginal stains. (A) $45

397. England (Westmoreland), George Bickham, London, ca. 1796. 5.7 x 8.5". (BW) Very interesting copper engraving of a forest road with several travelers. The hill in the background depicts several villages with each place named. George Bickham was an important engraver and the son of the famous English calligrapher of the same name. People walk along the waterway on a broad, tree-lined, avenue with ships in the water. Tall masts in the distance and good detail of numerous buildings. (BW) Fine copper engraving of the city looking across the river with sailing ships as well as local craft. Finely dressed people walk along the promenade. Manuscript pencil from previous owner added "St." in front of the title; expertly done. Some marginal foxing. (A) $45

405. Russia (Zariza … [together with] Twer), Vander Aa, Leiden, ca. 1725. 13.5 x 11". (BW) Two exquisite copper engravings of Russian cities. Each depicts a walled city, with church steeples dominating the skyline, surrounded by the countryside in which there are people with wagons, boats, ferries, and animals. Great view of 18th century life, as well as architecture. Very crisp impressions. Toned, with one marginal tear. (A) $150-200

406. Italy (A Prospect of Mount Vesuvius with its Irruption in 1630.), Anon., Gentleman’s Magazine, London, [1750]. 7.7 x 6". (BW) Very dramatic view of the mountain undergoing a major eruption with a city in flames at its base and villagers fleeing across a bridge. Crisp, early impression on hand laid paper. (PC) The famous nude bathing scene with 21 nude men and women bathing together. Noted as the first nudes of Japanese by an American artist. The print was considered a "forbidden" view and was subsequently omitted in many of the printings of this report by Adm. Matthew Perry. Scarce. (A+)   Click image for full size.   $90

422. World War I (Set of ten prints), Sir David Muirhad Bone, [1917]. 6 x 8.5". (PC) Bone was an eminent Scottish etcher and lithographer of architectural views, landscapes and portraits. He was the Official War Artist during WWI. This collection of colored prints were made in France and depict the destruction in the countryside. Included is a scene of Scottish soldiers (one playing the bagpipe) resting after a battle. (A+)  Click image for full size.  $50
