This delicately crafted vellum leaf was created in France during the Middle Ages. On the verso is a large capital 'D' adorned within a vine border. The text is part of one of the most famous prayers to the Virgin of the Middle Ages: Obsecro te and O, intemerata. It is from the Gospel readings at the beginning of the Book of Hours. Following is a rough translation of the prayer:

This simple leaf from a Book of Hours was written on paper either in Holland or the western part of Germany. The writing is not very regular and the decoration is very plain with some large initials in red ink, and a few flourishes of pen work at bottom.

This appealing vellum leaf is from a very late manuscript French Book of Hours, made after the reforms initiated by Pope Pius V in 1568. The scribe used dark brown ink and wrote in a fine rounded, Roman hand, perhaps in imitation of printed type.
