This is one of the most famous maps of America and one that had enormous influence on the future cartography of the New World. Frans Hogenberg engraved this map and it is primarily based on Gerard Mercator's great multi-sheet world map of 1569. The map features an exaggerated breadth of the North American continent, with a lengthy St. Lawrence River reaching across the continent to nearly meet t...

This handsome woodcut map is based on Abraham Ortelius' classic map of 1570, with the huge bulge in the southwest coastline of South America, the extensive western coastline of North America, and the great southern continent, here called Meridies Terra de Fuego. Because of the restrictions inherent in wood block printing, Petri's map is somewhat generalized. A village of Quivira an...

Merian prepared this reduced version of his 1631 map for the German translation of Pierre d'Avity's Les Empires du Monde and it accompanied other works of the period including Theatrum Europaeum. It is one of the many derivatives of Jodocus Hondius' map of 1618. North America is depicted with a prominent Virginia and an odd New England coastline. The western coastline above Califo...

This superb map is the first single-sheet map of the Americas to include carte-a-figures borders. The border decorations were inspired by Blaeu's wall map of 1608, but the portraits of Columbus, Vespucci and the first four circumnavigators are unique. The geography is based for the most part on Hondius' map of 1606, with the exception of the unique inset that shows the Northwest Passage f...

This fine miniature map is from the Italian version of Ortelius' pocket atlas published by Pietro Marchetti. The map is derived directly from the American map in the 1577 miniature atlas, which is a reduced version of the folio version of 1570. Even the bulge in the southwestern coastline of South America is present - even though it had already been corrected in the folio version of this period....

Visscher's map greatly influenced the cartography of the Americas both geographically and artistically. One of the most distinctive geographic details copied by other cartographers is the large open lake in the Great Lakes region. Visscher actually copied this from Blaeu's wall map of the world [1648], but popularized it on this map. California is shown as an island, on the Briggs model ...

Uncommon and exceptionally decorative map of the Americas based largely on Visscher's map of 1658. California is shown as a large island after Henry Brigg's map with the Pacific coastline continuing northeast toward the Straet Anian, which separates it from Anian. The interior is lacking any of the recent French discoveries and there is one huge, open-ended, Great Lake and a...

This is an extremely scarce derivative of Nicolas Visscher's influential map of the Americas. The map was originally engraved and published by Johannes de Ram. This state was published by Jacob de La Feuille, who acquired the plate through his marriage to Maria de Ram, the widow of Johannes de Ram. La Feuille added Terra Esonis and the names of seas along the coasts to the plate and repla...

Charming map of the Americas with California as an island. The Great Lakes are shown open-ended in the west and a major westward flowing river emanates from a large inland lake. In South America the mythical, equatorial Lake Parime is shown in Guyana, but is not named. The Insulae Solomis are prominent in the Pacific with Quiri Regio partially outlined, reflecting Du...

This ornamental map of the Americas depicts California as an island with a northern coastline indented by two bays on the second Sanson model. California is separated from the mainland by the island-dotted Mare Rubrum. A faint coastline of Terra Esonis stretches northwestward off the map. The interior is fully engraved with mountains, forests, place names and Indian tribes....

This boldly engraved map of the Americas features California as an island. The map shows the major political divisions with very few place names or other information. Terre Australe still appears below Tierra del Fuego. There is a simple title cartouche at lower left and a distance scale at upper left. This is apparently a derivative of Denise Macquart's map, although it does not...

Handsome and decorative eighteenth century map of the Americas with considerable detail throughout. There is no coastline shown above the peninsular California. The very large title cartouche includes two erupting volcanoes showering the landscape with large rocks, Native Americans, palm trees, sugar cane, parrots and what appears to be a pot of gold. Johann Matthias Haas was a professor of mat...

Interesting and uncommon small map of the Americas showing a Northwest Passage based on the infamous expedition by Admiral Bartholomew de Fonte, and a massive Sea of the West. In 1708, a newly discovered account of the Spanish Admiral's 1640 discovery of the passage was published. That account was actually a journalistic hoax, but thereafter the account was changed and elaborated u...

This map presents the hemisphere on an unusual projection developed by John Hardy of Eton College. The map is split into two football-shaped halves with the Caribbean islands nestled in the spaces between. The colonies of Virginia, North and South Carolina and Georgia are shown with their western boundaries on the Mississippi River. The Pacific Northwest is elongated with the Alaskan region gr...

This map of the Western Hemisphere is the left side of an uncommon, double-page map of the world. The map is filled with the tracks of explorers and circumnavigators including Christopher Columbus and Captain Weddel's exploration of Antarctica in 1823. There is excellent detail of the South Pacific and New Zealand is well-delineated.

This is an extremely uncommon map of the Americas published in Prague by Marco Berra. The map was probably copied from Carl Ferdinand Weiland's similar map but is not credited. Marco Berra is better know for his music publications. The map shows Texas, Tetaus, as part of Mexico, along with the rest of the Southwest. The northern border extends U.S. claims into Canada.
