This map is a splendid example of Coronelli's style with the topographical features graphically depicted. It first appeared in Coronelli's Atlante Veneto in 1691. The map covers the region of present-day Montenegro and a section of the southern Dalmatian coastline, including Dubrovnik (Ragusi). Notes in Italian and coats of arms are scattered throughout the map. The large title cartouche includes a fabulous sea monster. Coronelli established the society of geographers "Accademia degli Argonauta", one of the oldest in the world, and became the official geographer of the Venetian Republic. His maps of the Adriatic Sea were of particular strategic and economical importance and were also often used to glorify Venice and its victories over the Turks.
