A. Caljou de Lima, by Joris van Spilbergen, from Oost ende West-Indische Spiegel..., circa 1619 (8.4 x 5.9"). In 1614 the Dutch East India Company dispatched a fleet of ships under the command of Joris van Spilbergen to promote Dutch trade in South America and the East Indies. In July 1615 the Dutch found the Spanish lying in wait in Callao and a battle ensued. This engraving depicts the harbor of Callao with the city of Lima seen in the distance. Numerous Spanish ships are anchored in the harbor with hundreds of Spanish infantry on land, while Dutch ships advance and fire on the Spanish. The engraving comes with a page of text from Spilbergen's account, with a key identifying the various ships, regiments, and buildings. Condition: Minor soiling and light toning in the blank margins. (A)

B. Veue de Callao de Lima, by Constantin de Reneville, from Recueil des Voyages ... les Provinces-Unies des Pais-Bas, circa 1725 (6.5 x 5.5"). On May 12, 1624, Dutch Admiral Jacques L'Hermite attacked Callao and succeeded in burning 30 Spanish ships. This bird's-eye view depicts this incident, showing the port of Callao with Spanish and Dutch ships in the bay, engaged in battle. Several Dutch ships are labeled on the map, including the Hollandia, the Delft, the Amsterdam, and the Eendracht. The fortifications and buildings of Callao are rendered in nice detail. A compass rose radiates rhumb lines in the bay. Condition: Issued folding with light offsetting and a short fold separation in the top blank margin. (B+)
