An invaluable reference tool providing the reader with an in-depth examination of the history, culture and spirituality of the region. The book is exquisitely illustrated with more than 120 color plates and numerous, modern color photographs. David Roberts was a highly regarded Scottish artist and member of the Royal Academy initially known for his beautiful landscape paintings. In the mid-eighteenth century, Roberts spent nearly a year touring the Holy Land to draw the many historic sights and monuments, and to keep a journal of his experiences. This reprinted edition includes extracts from Roberts' original journal to accompany each of the lithographic prints. The book is in five sections of 72 pages (360 pages total), with the text printed horizontal to the binding. Hardbound in original maroon cloth covers with gilt title on spine, and pictorial dust jacket. Published by Wellfleet Press.
