A nice pair of maps that provide an interesting comparison of the expansion of the railroads over the 36 year period between the publications.

1) Map of Japan for Tourists Published by the Welcome Society of Japan folds into pretty pictorial self wrappers with woodblock prints of a geisha and Mt. Fuji. The map, published in 1897 and measuring 31.8 x 14.2", and information about the Welcome Society are on one side, with advertisements, some nicely illustrated, on verso. This map is identified as "No. 9427 of First Edition. The total issue eleven thousand. November, 1897." Map has some soiling, and minor wear to the edges, not affecting the image. Grade B+.
2) The Travelers' Map of Japan Chosen (Korea) Taiwan (Formosa) with Brief Descriptions of the Principal Tourist Points in Japan is a large, detailed map that measures 31 x 29" and folds into self wrappers. Printed in 1933 by the Japanese railroads, the brochure appears to have been printed for English speaking tourists. The central map of Honshu, Kyushu, Shikoku, includes Korea. Insets are: General Map of Japan... with mainland China including Peiping, Canton, and a depiction of the Great Wall. Karafuto, Hokkaido, Taiwan and enlarged areas around Tokyo and Osaka. A tremendous amount of sightseeing information is on the reverse. Map has a tiny fold separation repaired with archival tape on verso, else fine. Grade A.
