Stunning map of the classical region of Thrace, with most of present-day Bulgaria and Romania. It encompasses the southern Balkans from the Sea of Marmara to the Bosphorus, along the western shore of the Black Sea to the mouth of the Danube River. Ortelius based the map in part on the work of Jacob Gastaldi. Beautifully decorated with a most elaborate title cartouche, ships and sea monsters. Latin text on verso and the page number 89, indicating it was published in the 1584 edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum.

References: Van den Broecke #159.

Condition: B

A dark impression on a sheet with some tears repaired with archival tape on the verso on the centerfold, and a couple around the cartouche with a small amount of loss. Margins trimmed but still ample.
