A superb engraving by Carr after a painting at Versailles by Charles le Brun, showing an allegorical scene of Louis XIV during the Dutch War of 1672-1678. The Dutch War was fought by France, Munster, Cologne and England against the Dutch Republic, and it was ended in 1678 by the Treaty of Nijmegan, giving France the Franche-Comte from Spain. The king is pointing to a map of the Rhine River Valley, indicating the area that the French army was able to cross, with a number of maps of fortified towns on the floor below. The king is attended by gods, goddesses and angels, all surrounded with a superb Baroque surround studded with the accoutrements of war.

A sound example with a nice impression. There is a strip of irregular toning across the engraving and a couple of minor abrasions. The margins have a few defects, not affecting the image.
