This is a very charming two toned, lithographed pocket map, published by H.W. Faust, showing the city's layout before the famous earthquake of 1906. This map has two insets showing broader views of the Bay area, and a legend that explains some of the features of the map, such as ward boundaries and streetcar routes. Interestingly, the most prominent landmarks are several large cemeteries taking up much of the real estate near Golden Gate Park. In the latter part of the nineteenth century Henry W. Faust issued about fifteen editions of his map of San Francisco both in pocket form (and accompanied by a street directory, city guide, or both, or neither) and as wall maps. All are extremely rare, with none listed in the dealer's catalog references we have on hand. This wonderful map, noted as the ninth edition, folds into its accompanying guide that contains 64 pages of essential information for the visitor, including lists of bath houses and secret societies. Several amusing advertisements appear throughout the guide. Original printed soft covers, 4 x 6.5".
