Extremely important map of the Americas, which includes the first mention of several names from the explorations of Coronado of 1540-42, including the elusive cities of Cibola and Quivera. Sierra Nevada appears for the first time, following the voyage of Juan Rodrequez Cabrillo in 1542. It leaves open the question of a land bridge from North America to Asia. Japan is named for the first time as Giapam. The map was originated by Gastaldi and is one of five woodblocks he did for Ramusio. This is the second woodcut, as the first block was destroyed in a fire shortly after its publication in 1556.

Nice impression. Toned along centerfold with some creasing and cracks resulting in a small loss of paper. While sound, the old repair could be greatly improved by a professional conservator.
