This map is commonly known as the 'Zeno Map' as it is Ruscelli's version of Nicolo Zeno's map of 1558. The Zeno brothers, Nicolo and Antonio, made a voyage into the North Atlantic around 1380. Their journals describe a land to the west of Greenland called Estotiland (Labrador) and Deogeo (thought to be Newfoundland), and is therefore one of the earliest cartographic records of North America. The map covers the region from Scandinavia to Engronelant (Greenland), Estotiland and Deogeo. Lying to the south of Iceland is the fictitious island of Frislant complete with a number of cities and towns. The Ruscelli edition provided wide distribution of the map and greatly influenced the cartography of the region including Mercator and Ortelius. This is the second state, with the title slightly changed.
